Inspirational mother and son featured on 60 Minutes segment called “Musically Speaking”

Rex has been extremely busy since his last 60 Minutes profile aired in November of 2008. Now in high school, he has seen his book REX—A Mother, Her Autistic Child and the Music that Transformed their Lives translated into eight foreign languages. With that, he has travelled extensively to share his story around the country and world. His most recent international presentation was in Oman in The Middle East., where he gave two performances, and spent a morning playing piano for (and with) the only Early Intervention Center in Oman. An Omani Sheik, who hosted one of the performances, said of Rex after his performance, “I’ve been around the world 10 times in my own jet, and I’ve seen everything! BUT . . . I’ve never seen that!”

Rex recently had the honor of playing at “The First Lady’s reception” (First Lady of California) for Maria Shriver at the Hearst Castle Challenge for Best Buddies International. That led to requests from the Shriver family for Rex to play at Vice President Biden’s residence in Washington D.C. to kick off a weekend in honor of Eunice Kennedy Shriver and all the work she did for the disabled. As Rex sat at the piano following his performance, Vice President Biden said to the audience, “Every Vice President from now on will know that the most remarkable man played on this piano, because with Mom’s permission, I’m actually going to put a plaque on the piano . . . I don’t think it’ll ever be played better than that.”

Recent media coverage includes a Thanksgiving Day 2009 profile of Rex on ABC’s Eyewitness News and a December 2010 documentary profile on The Science Channel, which was the beginning of a series on 8 exceptional lives called “Ingenious Minds.” During this profile Rex is seen working on musical composition and improvisation with world renowned concert pianist and classical improvisationist Gabriela Montero, demonstrating how Rex continues expanding into the realm of spontaneous musical creativity. In addition to the segment on Rex, The Science Channel series includes a segment on the “ingenious mind” of renowned autism specialist Temple Grandin. When the series concludes in March, Rex’s segment is scheduled to re-air. Following a November 2010 performance by Rex at a Miami Gala fundraiser for “Best Buddies International,” which also featured R& B star Jason DeRulo, ABC’s “Tonight on the News” anchor said, “But the superstar of the night was Rex Lewis-Clack, the blind autistic teenager, a musical savant, who despite his disabilities can play a song on the piano after hearing the tune just once. Rex . . . blowing everybody away.” Rex says, “Music means having friends. Music means having friends.” Rex will be filming a new profile in March for a series to air in Japan in 2011.

On the home front in Los Angeles Rex is a frequent guest at The Classical Underground, where his piano playing has drawn acclaim and where he is featured alongside world class classical musicians. Classical Underground owner Alexey Steele says of Rex in Forth Magazine in 2010, “You are in the presence of a tangible miracle. It is an incredible example of art surpassing any limitations of body.”
